Rice...How to eat or give away....

When I think of feeding my kids I sometimes get discouraged. They are picky. This doesn't mean that I make anything different. I make the normal fare; pasta, potatoes, tacos, chili , pizza, fish , chicken etc....I try to have at least one thing at the meal that they will enjoy like some kind of fruit or bread. I also think each child should at least try a bite of what I have so lovingly prepared for them. Are our meals an extraordinary culinary experience? If crying ,pouting, and general displeasure are what you think as extraordinary, then, well yes.

The worst culprit of this culinary experience is rice! I like rice. I think it goes well with many dishes and as of late I have been experimenting with different kinds of rice. I thought perhaps my children would find some other kind of rice they might enjoy. Rice it seems has not found a place at my table, which I find interesting since more than half the worlds population subsist on rice. There must be some genetic predisposition to rice that missed my children's DNA.

Blake has taken to hiding one grain at a time in apples or strawberries and yes I did say one grain...ridiculous I know.

It took five hours to down load this 1 minute piece...crazy slow Internet.

As I said yesterday we are studying geography in our Co-op Home School Group. I found this great site last summer that donates rice to the UN World Hunger Program. I thought it was just a vocab game which donates ten grains of rice for every right answer. {My children are happy to give rice to others for consumption. In fact they feel like the are helping to improve our world in some small way. I agree and encourage them to do this often.} The great thing is that they have added some other subjects. One of them is geography and they use this as an extra activity to memorize where all the countries of the world are.

It is addicting and they could do it for hours, if I let them. They love watching the bowl of rice fill up. Ironic? Maybe. Try it yourself. The vocabulary is fun and so is the geography. I will continue to try and come up with fun and exciting ways to feed my children rice. I will let you know if I succeed. I know you are on pins and needles waiting to see if I can accompish this small feat!
Help end world hunger

What's up with that! I love rice. Keep trying. Greg's family eats with sugar and milk. I only like that when it is rice pudding with cinnamon and raisins. Unfortunately for me, My DNA lets me like ALL foods.
Except fried eggs and liver.2 non=fatening things.
